For instance, on a recent Saturday night, we received a message from one of our co-managed clients asking for some emergency assistance. The organization had received an email from a malicious actor showing screenshots of their directory structure on the server.

A security breach of any type can have severe consequences, and two of our senior-level engineers immediately responded to assess the threat. After a thorough forensic investigation, our team found that while the cybercriminal was able to get into the system, the security tools that we had in place worked perfectly and neutralized the threat.

Our security experts determined that the breach occurred through an open terminal service port. The port had been opened by in-house IT to facilitate adding to the system and logging in a few new users working remotely. Unfortunately, the perpetrator was able to fish credentials from one of the users and log in via that open port.

Upon further review, our team discovered that the cybercriminals had stolen the credentials on Friday. But after going through all of the system logs and firewall logs, there was no data extracted, and no information was lost or ransomed. Our endpoint protection tool stopped the perpetrator’s attempt to launch a ransomware attack. Additionally, our firewall blocked any data flow outside of their network, so the perpetrator could not extract any data.
